2016 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE HOMICIDE RESEARCH WORKING GROUP June 8-11, 2016

The 2016 Homicide Research Working Group annual meeting planning is in full swing! This year’s meeting will be held in St. Louis, Missouri at the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Gateway to Homicide: Patterns, Police, and Prevention.” Dr. David Klinger will be joining us for a special presentation on police shooting incidents and measurement.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Submissions are currently being accepted for both paper and poster presentations. Brief abstracts (up to 250 words) should be sent to the program co-chairs. Read the full call for papers here.

HOTEL INFORMATION
The site for the 2016 HRWG Annual Meeting in St. Louis is the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch, located at 2 South 4th Street at the intersection of South 4th and Market in Downtown St. Louis. This is an excellent hotel that is consistently rated among the top ten of 125 hotels in St. Louis by Trip Advisor (the current rating is #5). It is within walking distance of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (location of the Gateway Arch), Busch Memorial Stadium (home of the St. Louis Cardinals), the Old Courthouse (site of the Dred Scott decision), the Old Cathedral Museum, Laclede’s Landing (an entertainment district catering mostly to tourists), and the historic Soulard Neighborhood, which has evolved into an entertainment district catering mostly to locals.

Amenities included with your registration include a free hot breakfast, the 5:30 pm kickback that offers food and beverages, free Wifi throughout the hotel, an indoor pool, two whirlpools, a 24-hour fitness center, and both on-site, indoor parking at $16 per night and off-site parking.

The key to making reservations at the reduced conference rate is to use the group number (2249853). The conference rate for our group is $139 per night for a room with a king size bed and $149 per night for a room with two queen size beds. The dates of the annual meeting are Wednesday, June 8th through Saturday, June 11th. Shoulder rooms at the convention rate are available for Tuesday, June 7th, and Saturday, June 11th. When you reserve a room, you will have the option of one king size bed or two queen size beds.

SHARING ROOMS IN ST. LOUIS
We are introducing a new service for members this year by coordinating an information exchange for persons desiring to share a room with one or more others in St. Louis. If you are interested in sharing a room, please send the following information to both Sarah Ann and Jay (email addresses are below).

The information will be compiled and sent to all persons who are wanting a roommate on February 29, 2016. PREMEETING WORKSHOP (NEW)
HRWG members John Jarvis and James McCutcheon will be offering a workshop designed to help attendees learn more about working with NIBRS data. The workshop will be held just prior to the official start of the meeting on June 8th at the nearby University of Missouri-St. Louis. There is no fee for registration, but spaces are limited.
